Welcome to the 2012 FestivalWelcome to the 105th year of the Hastings Musical Festival which we hope will be once more an occasion for all to enjoy, whether you are Festival followers who enjoy popping in and out throughout the three weeks, or you are interested in one particular session, be it Pianoforte, or Dancing, or the One Act Plays, or you’ve come to watch your young child or your elderly friend giving their best performance on stage. Sadly we have to accept that some classes have seen a drop in entrants this year, no doubt a reflection of the difficult financial times we are all experiencing, but then inexplicably in some sessions there are happily more entrants than ever. The pledge of the Executive of the Hastings Musical Festival is to do our utmost to continue to keep HMF going in the right direction, and to honour our two commitments as a charity - the provision of excellent performance opportunities with the input of qualified and experienced adjudicators during the Festival, and the annual awarding of special grants. In 2011 we were able to award grants totalling £4250 to 15 young Festival performers as they went off to college or conservatoire to continue their studies, and in addition four of these received further grants totalling £4385 from the John and Irene Foster Charitable Trust. We are privileged to have the continued support of our President Miss Petula Clark CBE, a celebrated artiste who began her performance career as a child and is still an international star, and we hope to welcome her once again to the 2012 Festival. We hope that the choice of Sunday and the earlier time will attract more audience to our final Concert which is the climax of our three week Festival. Please book your seats early for this very special evening. Put the dates in your diary for our most popular events and book in advance where necessary eg. the schools choirs day, and the group dancing. This year marks our eighth International Piano Concerto Competition. If you have never attended the Finals before, I urge you to come to enjoy the exciting performances of three talented young pianists on Saturday 24th March at 6.00pm. This Concert presents a wonderful first orchestral concert experience for young people, and this year we are offering a free ticket to an accompanied child. If you would like to take up this offer please ask at the box office when booking your seat. My thanks always to all our entrants, to our audience, our team of volunteer helpers, our executive committee for their round the year work, and our indefatigable general secretary, Brenda Bailey, as well as to the management and staff of the White Rock Theatre, who do all they can to make our three weeks in the theatre as enjoyable as possible. I wish you all a happy 2012 Festival. |
