2008 Finals Review

The Finals of the 2008 Hastings Musical Festival International Piano Concerto Competition took place at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings on Saturday 15th March where the three Finalists gave an evening of romantic piano concertos, following Finchley Chamber Orchestra’s Overture from Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte under their conductor David Lardi.

Announcement of the results was given by Sir Philip Ledger CBE, chairman of the jury, which included Peter Katin and Richard Evans. Mr Rodney Vaughn of Blüthner Piano Centre, London who have so generously supported the competition from its re-birth four years ago, presented the Blüthner Trophy and a Cheque for £1000 to Otis Beasley from Devon, for his Rachmaninov  Concerto no. 2. Otis who is twenty-two also received the Sir Philip Ledger Prize of £250 for the youngest pianist to play in the finals. German born Diana Brekalo gained second place and a cheque for £250 for her Chopin Concerto no. 2. Olivia Sham from Australia gained third place and a cheque for £150 for her playing of Tchaikovsky’s Concerto no. 1. The Chairman thanked every one who supported this very worthwhile and exciting project.
