Dance Syllabus Changes
(by Administrator, published Saturday, 04 July 2009 18:09)
Dancing
All England Dance
We are delighted to announce that the Dancing Section of the Hastings Musical Festival has been accepted as a Qualifying Festival for the All England Dance Festival.
This prestigious festival gives young dancers the opportunity to compete at the highest standard and to have a chance to progress to dance in both the Regional Finals locally and if they are successful, to dance in the Grand Finals held in a London Theatre, usually the Peacock Theatre in London’s Theatreland.
The next Hastings Musical Festival in 2010 is our first Qualifying Festival for All England, and is one of the first in the new qualifying year. South East Regional Finals and the Grand Finals will take place in 2011.
As a result, you will notice in the 2010 syllabus that some time limits have changed to comply with All England rules. We have also introduced some new Trio and Quartet classes but unfortunately have lost the Minigroup classes. Please check the syllabus carefully when planning dances and submitting your entries.
We do hope that this will encourage new dancers to join our festival and look forward to welcoming them and their family and friends.

International Piano Concerto Competition
(by Administrator, published Wednesday, 23 June 2010 15:10)
We are now getting ready for the 2011 Festival and are looking forward to seeing many talented performers, particularly in the Piano Concerto Competition which is entering its seventh year. Entries were again extremely good last year in this annual competition which attracts young pianists from all over the world.
This competition offers an outstanding opportunity for audiences to witness talent of the very highest order. Over the few years the Piano Concerto Competition has been running, we have seen artists such as our past Prize-Winners Mario Mazo, Samantha Ward, Natalia Loresch, Otis Beasley and Jonathan Wilson and many others appear on the world stage after appearing in our competition.
It is quite clear from the success of many of the entrants that the Competition offers an invaluable opportunity for young concert pianists to further their careers so that artists of tomorrow are introduced to the audiences of today. In addition, prizewinners receive a cash sum to help further their career, and concerto opportunities.
Entry forms will be available from the Festival Website within the next few months, so please bookmark this page and keep your diary clear next year!
2011 Dates:
Preliminary Round:
28th February/1st March 2011
The Hastings Piano Concerto Finals Concert:
Saturday 12th March 6.00PM at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings.
Three Finalists play their concerti with the Sussex Concert Orchestra.

(by Administrator, published Wednesday, 23 June 2010 15:36)
2010 Prizewinner's Concert

Molly Townson invites you to join her for the annual trip to our 2010 Prizewinner's London Concert, Saturday 20th November 2010.
We will be leaving Hastings at 3.00pm and returning by midnight. A pre-concert supper is traditionally enjoyed by all at a very nice Italian Restaurant just a few minutes walk from the venue in Finchley.
This annual trip has been much enjoyed by friends of the Festival in the last few years, but the more people that join us, the better the price for individuals.
Please register your interest with Molly through the website and she will ensure you receive notification and a booking form in September.

Roger Daltrey - Press Release
(by Administrator, published Friday, 01 January 2010 00:03)
Hastings Musical Festival is extremely sad to announce that Roger Daltrey contacted the Chairman a few days before Christmas to inform her that he will not be able to adjudicate the rock band classes in march 2010 after all, because he will be on tour in the United States of America.
Fans of Roger will have noticed on the internet that he is joining Eric Clapton’s tour through February and March. He has, however, expressed a hope that he will be able to join us at Hastings Musical Festival in the future.
Whilst this is very disappointing for the Festival and of course for the rock bands,we are determined not to let it spoil our rock band sessions. We are pleased to announce that Roger will be replaced by Paul Roberts (ex The Stranglers).

Paul has recorded, written and appeared on over 30 albums and singles with artists including The Lightning Seeds, OMD and Nigel Kennedy. His work has been recorded with some of the best names in music including Alan Winstanley, Cenzo Townshend, Nicky Graham and Pete Glenister amongst others. Paul formed and still performs regularly with his band Soulsec. In 2008 Ivor Novello award winner Martin Phipps asked Paul to join him to record songs for the BBC drama department.

Singing

Singing
Major Singing!
Singing has always been a major part of Hastings Musical Festival. In 2007 there were 23 sessions of singing with 89 classes for solos, duets, ensembles and choirs in a variety of styles. We encourage wide participation of all age groups and abilities, and have classes ranging from those aimed at novice singers, who may never have sung at a Festival, through to our medal classes for experienced singers, both junior and adult. The Festival provides an opportunity to try new repertoire, to gain experience of performing in public, and to learn from listening to other singers and to the comments of our friendly and helpful adjudicators.

2011 Syllabus
(by Administrator, published Saturday, 10 July 2010 12:00)
2011 Syllabus
The Summer term is coming to its close and pupils and teachers alike are looking forward to six weeks away from school and hopefully lots of sunshine and a carefree holiday. The Hastings Musical Festival is very busy assembling what is possibly the most exciting syllabus for many years.
There are to be many new and very different classes next year.
In the Dancing section we have the introduction of hip-hop/street dancing. The classes will be held in the Sussex Hall which has the advantage of a fully sprung floor which is essential for the genre of dance. There will be a specialist adjudicator and a completely separate set of rules – please be sure to read them carefully.
In the Instrumental section the Rock classes are being expanded, meaning that the PA system will be in situ for 2 days, with new classes in Contemporary Electric Guitar and Drum Kits. Also in this section the Festival is introducing a Primary School Day aimed at schools who participate in the Wide Opportunities Scheme.
In the Speech and Drama Section the plays take on an entirely new look. Being performed in the intimate setting of the Sussex Hall the new play classes will be performed in the modern studio style as offered in most Drama Schools. Cash prizes are introduced to celebrate this exciting project and to encourage entries.
