Solo Singing Selections
It is becoming increasingly difficult to buy songs as single copies, and for that reason it may be
necessary to buy a collection or cycle for the sake of one set song.We appreciate that this will be
more expensive but trust that these anthologies will be a valuable addition to a singer’s library.
All singing set pieces are available from:
Brittens Music, Grove Hill Road, Tunbridge Wells
Telephone: 01892 526659
Email: [email protected]
In case of difficulty obtaining set pieces, please contact the General Secretary.

Provisional Dates
The provisional dates for Singing Classes are: Thursday 7th (Junior Singing and John Lockey heats); Friday 8th (Choirs, Brownies and Guides); Saturday 9th (Intermediate Classes); Monday 11th and Tuesday 12th (Show Song Classes); Thursday 21st (Pop Vocal Classes); Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd (Senior Singing). The timetable is kept flexible to adapt to the number of entries received.  Where possible, planned dates for specific classes are given in the Syllabus and shown in the margins but these may have to be changed.

Please check your programme for confirmation.

NOTE - Credit will be given for choice of repertoire, presentation, dress and deportment, including a bow at the end of the performance.  No Costume allowed, unless specified.

For Own Choice pieces, suitability of content and language must be considered with regard to age group. The suitability of material is decided at the Adjudicator's discretion and must not contain profane or offensive words.  "Adult" or offensive material is not acceptable and Adjudicators are advised to take this into account when marking.     They also have authority to stop any performance at their discretion.  This would lead to automatic disqualification.

Several test pieces, as indicated, have been taken from anthologies which have been named in the syllabus in an abbreviated form.  A copy of these test pieces will be available for inspection at the Hastings and Bexhill branches of the East Sussex County Library.  All speech classes should be learnt.

The Hastings Festival has entered into an agreement with the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society. This means that performers do not have to seek permission for any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items* performed to a time limit of 10 minutes.

Performers and teachers will be delighted to know that their participation in this festival means authors will be directly reimbursed as a consequence of their works being performed at this festival.

Duologues and group dramatic activity are not covered by this agreement and copyright for these items should be sought by performers at the time of entry.

*Dramatic Items must be announced with title and author at the time of performance to qualify for copyright indemnity, and the performer must not change the words or gender of the character.

All performers in group work must be within the age range.

All classes are for boys and girls, except where stated.

All performers are asked to bow at the conclusion of their piece.
